Jefferson County Offers an Abundance of Home Buyer Information and Counseling
The Jefferson County At Home program extends a wealth of assistance to help individuals and families make informed decisions about their housing options. HUD-certified housing counselors provide counseling on a wide range of housing-related topics, including financial management and budgeting; home improvement and rehabilitation; purchasing or renting a home; and post-purchase counseling.
Workshops for Home Buyers
In conjunction with these services, a free Home Buyer Education Workshop will be held on Wednesday, May 14th from 5:30-9:30pm at the lower level of the UW Extension Building, 864 Collins Road in Jefferson. All interested home buyers are encouraged to attend. These Home Buyer Education Workshops are held every second Wednesday of each month through November.
Home Buyer Questions Answered
Jefferson County Administrator Michael Luckey stated in a news release: “At the Home Buyer Education Workshop, attendees will have an opportunity to discover answers to questions such as: Am I ready to own a home? How much do I need for a down payment? What if I have credit problems? Income-qualified home buyers may also be eligible for up to $20,000 in down payment assistance. The workshop is not only specific for first-time home buyers, but for anyone in the buying market.”
Jefferson County is a HUD Certified Counseling Agency - HUD is the Umbrella Program
“Jefferson County is a HUD-certified counseling agency, meaning that we can offer housing counseling and education services, home buyer education, and a home rehabilitation program. This service is provided in line with the county’s strategic plan, which calls for diverse housing opportunities for all current and future residents,” according to Luckey.
Program Specialist & Certified Housing Counselor
RoxAnne Witte serves as Jefferson County’s Program Specialist and Certified Housing Counselor. “Mortgage lenders often require borrowers to complete a HUD-approved home buyer education course in order to qualify for special incentive programs, including down payment and closing costs assistance. The Jefferson County At Home - Home Buyer Workshop, combined with one-on-one counseling offered through the Jefferson County Homebuyer office, fulfills the home buyer education requirement,” according to the Jefferson County ThriveED.org/athome website.
Relief for Older Residents Seeking Home Rehabilitation
May is also Older Americans Month, and one issue facing many of Jefferson County’s older residents is home repair and rehabilitation. Jefferson County offers a zero-percent interest, deferred loan program for up to $24,999 to assist eligible homeowners with needed home repairs.
Repairs include mechanical and structural issues, and accessibility repairs and improvements that have been approved by the program administrator. Significantly, repair and rehabilitation also includes such needs as handicap accessibility; window and door replacement; roofing, siding and porch repairs; electrical upgrades; heating, water and plumbing systems repair and/or replacement; and water and sewer line connection.
